Our goals and visions for the future

Solutions for a universal need

We all get old. It's a universal truth. It's  going to happen to you or someone you love. We want to work on solutions that will help those who need it.  Here are some solutions you need to know about:

The Green house Project

A home, not a warehouse

The Green House Project is a revolution in  assisted living facilities. The Green House model creates an environment that's more like a family home than a hospital. Folks have more freedom. They can help with chores, and contribute meaningfully to the group  experience.

Here's a link to the Green House Project's website. See if it's something you would want someone you love to have available in your community.

The Green House Project during Covid

This 4-minute video show how well the Green House model performed during Covid compared with traditional nursing homes.  It's very convincing.

Kallimos communities – A new, holistic, integrated model

Kallimos Communities

"You have two options when it comes to growing old. You can be independent alone or dependent together. Kallimos is pioneering a new way – Being Independent Together." — Dr. Bill Thomas, Chief Innovation Officer, Kallimos Communities.

Dr. Bill Thomas is a physician, professor, entrepreneur, playwright, and performer, whose wide-ranging work explores the terrain of human aging.  The Wall Street Journal highlighted Dr. Thomas as one of the nation’s “top 10 innovators” changing the future of retirement in America.

Dr. Thomas began his career in the field in the early 1990’s when he co-founded The Eden Alternative. In the early 2000’s he launched The Green House Project, which Provider Magazine called the “pinnacle of culture change.”

Kallimos Design

The current inventory of housing in this country is not designed for the changing needs that come with aging, injury, or disease. The house you raised your children in, or even the house you down-sized to, can become a hindrance to your well-being. The maintenance and upkeep of these houses can become a burden.

In Kallimos, you enjoy the benefits of privacy without isolation or loneliness. You are surrounded by good neighbors who know you well, and you can live in your own home. What we have learned is that when you design a place that is good for the frailest among us, you design a place that is good for everyone.

A MAGIC Community

Multi-Ability, multi-Generational Inclusive Community

All ages are welcome and appreciated for the gifts they bring to the community. Kallimos brings generations together to create a community of good neighbors who know and help each other.

hospice House

What's a hospice house

A hospice house is a peaceful home-like residence where terminally ill people receive short term hospice care. The patients are limited to hospice patients – either those who are newly entering hospice care or are already established hospice patients. The hospice house will be staffed by skilled hospice nurses, aides, and a physician or nurse practitioner. Each hospice patient will have a comfortable, private bedroom so their loved ones can remain at the bedside around the clock when time is precious. The setting is very quiet, homey, and tranquil – unlike a hospital or nursing home.

Hospice  houses  already exist in many states. Here's an example of one in Southwest Virginia

Local Co-housing

Re-creating the traditional extended family

In Fairfield, there are a number of people who would be willing to share a home with others like themselves. The benefits are many. Stay in your home environment much longer and postpone or even avoid the nursing home.

  • Companionship. Humans are social animals. We enjoy the presence of friends for emotional support.
  • Family table. Shared shopping,  food preparation, meals and clean up mean better nutrition. Enjoy the food you like, not the nursing home diet.
  • Safety.  Living alone is risky. It's nice to know there's someone to help you up if you fall and take you to the doctor if necessary.
  • Transportation. In the shared home you may not need a car. It's a good feeling to give a friend a needed ride.

Two easy solutions

Are you an  empty nester?

If you live alone in a home with multiple bedrooms, would you like to create a co-housing solution for yourself and others? You could invite a few compatible friends, with whom you could share expenses and perhaps even mortgage payments.

Or could you buy an existing building?

You might join with a group of friends to buy and convert an existing house. Although homes with multiple bedroom are likely to be multi-story, there are now inexpensive home elevators for those that can't climb stairs. You might trade up this way to a better property than the one you’re living in now.
